Do Caribbean island vacations cost more than places like Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket?

Anonymous
I have never been to any of the Caribbean islands. I’ve heard Turks and Caicos is lovely for instance. We typically spend a week in MV or Nantucket but drive up not fly.

What is the average week stay on a Caribbean island?

Totally depends on what level accomodations you are staying at. In general, I think Puerto Rico is probably going to be the cheapest. We did a non all inclusive in Aruba for $320/night. We've also done more expensive trips.

Unless you are using points, if you're flying it is going to be much more expensive.

What time of year?

Yes and no. A stay at the Ritz in Cayman would cost more but a stay at a condo in Cayman could be comparable, depending upon how much you eat at the rental vs out. Aruba has fancy hotels and restaurants and it has airbnbs and cheap eats. The French side of St. Martin is more expensive than the Dutch side. Curaçao can be comparable if that’s your objective. Jamaica can be cheaper.

Way more expensive in the Caribbean. Lodging is at least 1k/night and food is expensive b/c many things are imported. We spent 10k on Spring Break just lodging and eating.

You can get lodging for less than $1k a night

Yeah, no brah. You can spend whatever you want in the Caribbean. There are budgets for all budgets. Yeah, if you want all fancy pants and no cooking your own food, ok you will spend a ton. But if you absolutely want to experience a Caribbean island and not spend a mountain, there are plenty of choices available.

What kind of question is this? How many people are traveling? What do you usually spend on MV/Nantucket. JFC, it is hard to help people.

Op here. Thank you all! This is good to know. Family of five. We usually do not spend more than approximately $3,850 total including lodging, rental car, ferry, and food. We aren’t fancy dinner diners but spend most of our time lounging on the beach.

My household never could afford to travel growing up, so I have never been to any of the Caribbean islands.

Since you have to fly 5 people to the Caribbean, I'd say no way is the Caribbean cheaper (or even the same price).

OMG, we can’t even get away with spending that little in the crappy Outer Banks!

If you want to go someplace affordable and warm, Puerto Rico and Cancun are likelies.

Some back of the envelope math for you OP.

5 people x $500 per plane ticket = $2500.
7 nights x $200 per night = $1400 lodging.

You're already at $3900, and that's the low end of Caribbean options.

$200 a night for loving for 5 people. Are you crazy. Any decent AirBNB for 5 people (i.e. 3 bedrooms/2baths) is going to be at least $600 per night.

That’s not true, but it won’t be super nice. Which is fine for my house, unsure about most of DCUM.
