Semaglutide and alcohol

If you have taken semaglutides, did your alcohol consumption change? I asked my physician who didn't really give me a straight answer.

I was never a big drinker, but have even less desire for alcohol now that I am on semaglutide. I think this is very common with glp agonists. They decrease desire for alcohol, sugar, over consumption of food, even coffee (for me).

Part of it is that things just don’t taste as good as they did before. Part of it is, when I think about drinking (or eating or whatever), I just think, “eh, why bother”.

Anecdotally it sounds like this could happen.

I've never been a big drinker. I drink socially but never regularly at home or to excess. What I mean is whatever combination of things makes someone an alcoholic, I don't have it. I haven't noticed any change in my desire or enjoyment of alcohol, or its affect on me. Except that if I'm having side effects I don't want to drink just because I feel sick.

For context I had immediate and major (life changing) "food noise" reduction from semaglutide and lost 50lbs. I still get hungry, but food "works" to make me not hungry much, much better and for much longer. I used to think about food all the time and I only understood "fullness" as like, physical distention.

It makes you pretty sick if you drink on it. HORRIBLE heartburn.

I’m pretty sure people have discussed this quite a bit on Reddit. You can do a google search for Reddit alcohol semaglutide (or Ozempic) and read different experiences.

I find it fascinating.

Mine totally changed. I am a wine drinker and it just doesn't even taste good any longer. Maybe I will have a glass but most likely just a sip or two now.

I rarely drink, but used to enjoy wine when I had it. On Wegovy, it doesn't taste the same. I don't really enjoy it anymore. Same with sweets, to a lesser degree. I still like my coffee, but have heard from others that they no longer want coffee.

Can diabetics drink alcohol?

I've also heard that it totally changes the taste. I read once that when someone was on the meds wine tasted like battery acid! So of course youre not going to drink much if it tastes that awful. But not sure if that happens to everyone.

Okay, you must be the same diabetic troll in every post about SGs. It's getting so annoying.

Everything tastes the same to me. Food, alcohol. I’ve had zero change in taste or enjoying taste.

This is so interesting for me — my doctor just convinced me to go on Wegovy. Still waiting on insurance approval and assume I will then have trouble finding it. I don’t really drink, but I am very curious about the effects on taste. Thanks to everyone who is posting.

I can still drink a glass of wine or a beer, and it tastes the same. I was nit a big drinker before, but looked forward to a few glasses of wine in certain situations. Now I can take it or leave it. Same with sweets. They don’t taste different, I am just not interested. But again, I did not eat a lot of sweets before. It has greatly reduced my salty snack cravings though.

I loved wine before. But on Wegovy I really don't. Maybe white wine sometimes but not like before when I would enjoy a glass of red every night if I let myself. I also find myself forgetting about coffee after the first cup. I used to drink coffee all day. Sadly, Wegovy doesn't affect sugar for me. Maybe the only negative thing about Wegovy for me is that I still crave chocolate but since I'm not hungry, I could easily skip dinner and just have a little ice cream at night, which is obviously not healthy even though it does allow weight loss. I've caught myself having a cookie for no reason, then not wanting the next meal because I'm full. So I have to watch sugar super closely and not sabotage my overall health or protein goals.

This tracks for me. I don’t have any desire to drink alcohol and don’t drink nearly as much coffee. Still think about sweets a bit. I used to love wine!
