I think my legs may be disproportionately more toned/thin than my midsection. Apple shaped I guess it is called? I am working on weight loss (down 50 pounds!) and am around a size 18 now. But every pair of shorts I try on from any place is comically huge on my legs. Parachute shorts.
Any recs for something that is much more tapered on the legs? |
Look at stores that are more "junior plus" like old navy, the Gap, torrid, etc. I find they work better on my apple shape.
And consider the length that works best for you. I find that most plus size shorts are way too long on me and the closer to the knee the get, while still being that rectangular Bermuda shape, the more awful they look. By knowing upfront that a 9 or 10in short is too long, it saves me time on ordering the wrong thing |
At the risk of being mocked by the Talbots haters, this is what Talbots does well. Their larger sizes are actually shaped to fit women's bodies.

What style? I found I had luck with denim shorts that go about halfway down to my knee. One pair was Ava and Viv from Target and the other was a pair I got from Stitch Fix. |
I recommend looking for shorts that are more boxy shaped/structured and not “curvy fit”. Curvy fit are angled out, you want straight lines.
These are longer but they are called “stridged “ and are better for Apple shapes. You can go shorter too, high rise tends to be better. https://www.ae.com/us/en/p/women/bermuda-long-shorts/8-perfect-bermuda-shorts/ae-strigid-8-perfect-denim-bermuda-short/6332_7791_851?menu=cat4840004 |
I’m apple shaped and my best shorts strategy is to buy short ones, a size up, and wear them kind of low. I have some good ones from target. |
