Shingles questions…

Just diagnosed with shingles.

What worked for you to feel more comfortable?

Did you have other symptoms beyond the uncomfortable/painful rash? So far, I’m going ok (4 days after diagnosis) and wondering if it is going to get worse as this rash dries out.

The doctor said I could go to work if the area is covered and I’m not that uncomfortable.m. That seems sort of gross to me. I would not be thrilled if a colleague said they had it and were at work, sitting on common furniture etc.

I know many people don’t have jobs where they can work from home, but if you did, did you stay home or go in to work?

How long did it take to feel back to 100%?

Go to work. Why do you have to announce you have shingles at work? If no one touches your rash, no one will get chicken pox from it. Also, most people have been inoculated for chicken pox these days.

Cover the area with fabric, unless it is on your face. Take a prescription antiviral and over-the-counter NSAID (for both analgesia and anti-inflammatory effects). Stay cool and dry. Consider an antihistamine if there is any itching, especially as it heals.

There is no need to share any of this with work colleagues, as it doesn't affect them. If it is on your face and you don't want to deal with all the questions, feel free to take some sick days out of what you have banked.

Why on earth would you not stay home and rest?

I was diagnosed with shingles last Wednesday. I started feeling much better the next day, after I started the antivirals. I am planning to go into the office tomorrow unless I start to feel worse. Other than some weird aches and pains, I am feeling pretty good now. Since no one is going to be accessing my torso at the office, I feel pretty confident I will not be risking spreading chickenpox to any colleagues who are somehow not immune.

I got shingles from a former coworker. She didn’t realize she had it and was scratching her back and then touching stuff. We were in a closed up meeting for three days.

It sucked.

While you can catch chicken pox from someone with shingles, you cannot catch shingles from someone with shingles.

You cannot expose pregnant women, immunocompromised when you have shingles. Got to stay home.

DP. Right. The highlighted area from your link:

Newborn babies, pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems, and anyone who is not immune to chickenpox should avoid close contact with anyone who has shingles until the rash is gone.

What exactly do you think "close contact" means?

It means you don't work in their environment. This isn't old news...shingles patients need to lay low. Not new everybody.

I had a shingles rash for 6 weeks. As soon as my fever was gone, I returned to work per our HR and health office.
