Carl Sandburg middle

Can someone tell me what it’s like right now? Has it gotten better over the past few years? I have heard about fights daily in the halls. Is that still happening?

Not doing well from a budgeting standpoint. At risk of losing more in the areas of art and music.

Tons of vacancies are already posted and more will be coming I’m sure.

The whole school is forced to take intervention classes so that the kids who need it don’t feel bad

Yes, equity and feelings trump order and discipline.

Do most people pull their kids in middle to go to private? If they do do they go back to west Potomac high school after? Or stay private?

Op here

I don't live there, but I have many colleagues who do. Most of them used the elementary schools and West Potomac HS, but did private for middle school.

90% of Waynewood/Belle View/Stratford will go to Sandburg. All of the non-aap students will either take all honors or switch to all honors very quickly. Certain electives like chorus are also popular if kids want to avoids the worst of Sandburg

I only know one family who was there. They had two kids. One went to west po and had a very good experience. The other was pulled for high school and went to private school in. Dc. They are UMC white country club people. The younger one was befriended by another student who kept him safe from the gangs.

Safe from the gangs? JFK. Kids who stay away from the fights get left alone.

Op here - I get worried because my daughters do not do well with a lot of loud distractions, even if it’s not in their classrooms. Yelling, fighting, etc would cause them a lot of stress throughout the day.

Honest answer…..send to private school if you can afford it. I apologize to my DD for sending her there each time I sub at that school. Even the AAP /honors route doesn’t insulate them. This has nothing to do how kids treat subs (we all know that even the best kids try to take advantage as I did I back in the day), but the insane amount of issues with walking from class to class, drugs, truancy, tardy, disruptive behavior, and a great percentage of kids that don’t want to be there and don’t care about learning. It is awful and makes me sad. It keeps me up at night on how to improve this. I guess on a positive note, you can’t accuse my DD of being raised in a bubble.

Not true! My DC - a small, shy person, was pushed into lockers and called a racial slur every time a certain group saw DC in the hall. Had no classes together. DC described them as wanna be gang members.

Op - this is what scares me. We are actually in fort hunt elementary which is pretty diverse and so isn’t shocking like waynewood. But I am pretty sure my kids would be shocked at any sort of physical violence. And it will affect their ability to learn
