Haven't heard from any WLs yet

DC was waitlisted at 9 schools and only accepted to UMD. They decided to decline 3 of those offers but haven't heard anything from the other 6 in months. They sent an update recently after winning state-recognition with a monetary award but has not gotten any updates from any of these admission committees. We sent LOCIs... what went wrong? Shouldn't we have heard something by now?

Don't sweat it. You might not hear back until July or August. Put down your deposit and forget about them, hopefully good news is coming your way!

Not if the WL schools have extended their acceptance date.

Things are really messed up in FAFSA-land.

My husband and I are donut hole and Master's degree educated. Something went wrong with the original submission in early January and it was not returned to DC to fix until late March. By then he had accepted the school where he will go and received determination of no aid based on CSS profile. He was waitlisted from the one Ivy that he applied to. That was why we needed the FAFSA. For "fun", we've tried to fix the FAFSA. It keeps getting kicked back. Admittedly, I haven't called them. However, FAFSA stuff is messed up for tons of people, including people who need to know to make a decision.

So everything is going to be dragged out this year.

UMD is a good choice. Try to be patient. Maybe something else will happen but you are in good shape.

You may not hear back from any of them. Go all in on UMD and forget about the others.

My DC was accepted to UMD Engineering and Tufts. That's it. Waitlisted at any ivy and haven't heard anything either. Sent in LOCI as well. This is one that I haven't heard that anyone's been taken off yet. Just commiserating with you to be honest and letting you know that we're in the same boat.

Decision day extended at a number of schools. You may never hear from any of the schools. It is time to start loving the school that picked your kid and move on.

Don’t stress because you haven’t heard anything. My kid was waitlisted at NYU and Cornell. Not a peep from them. May 1 was just this past Wednesday, and I’m sure some kids asked for an extension because of the FAFSA delays. I expect that there will be movement this week.

The truth is that getting off a waitlist rarely happens (at most schools). Big public schools move more, but not the big name ones. Time to move on.

Not sure what schools you are waiting for but most schools have a low single digit rate of kids getting off the waitlist. Even lower I think if a popular major or not full pay. You didn’t do anything wrong, just getting off waitlist a long shot. Look at the CDS for each school.

Also, nothing wrong with UMD.

Check the CDS for the WL schools. Some schools only offer 10-20 spots (or zero spots) and have thousands on the waitlist.

Waitlist spots go mostly to private school kids. They have counselors with relationships with the universities and who call on behalf of the kids.

I have public and private school kids and the only ones I know who are getting off are private school kids (UVA, USC, Vanderbilt, etc)

My kid was waitlisted at 4 schools, and we haven’t heard anything.

Schools vary widely in the timing of their use of the waitlist, and as others have noted, this is a weird year. There are extensive discussions in the College Confidential forums about each school’s waitlist — if you’re so inclined, you can check those forums to see if the schools you’re interested in have taken any WL action yet. My ballpark is that 80-90% of schools haven’t done anything with their waitlists yet.

This.

Our private has seen a bit of private T20 WL movement already - started around April 26 (Duke; WashU; Northwestern; Rice).

This is not true.

This, odds are against admissions from waitlists.
