Large Suitcases

Anonymous
I have several very large suitcases (26" L, 18" W, 8 " high), from when I was young I guess. I am in my sixties now and can't imagine every carrying that much overseas again. I am single.

Even thought the bags are in good shape, no need to hang on to them, right?

Does anyone use large heavy suitcases when they travel nowadays? Perhaps if I ever live my fantasy of living in France for a few months...but I am leaning towards donating them somewhere.

I think you should donate them. They might not even fit in the trunk of most European cars.

Filling them full will exceed most airlines' baggage weight limits and will be inconvenient for hauling around when you're traveling. People are often looking for suitcases for local or longer distance moves; consider offering up on your neighborhood listserv or buy nothing group.

I was thinking about this the other day. My life and the bags I've used to travel. We have downsized our collection to fit our current travel style and needs. If I were going to live abroad I might re-think some luggage - but I highly doubt I'd use the old-style bags that easily go over the weight limit. Those bags themselves weighed a ton before they were even filled. Things are built to be lightweight and have better wheels and designs. I would start with Freecycle or a neighborhood listserv maybe a women's shelter? But they might end up being a landfill item.

Donate. I know people who fill up things like that for travel to S.A. and just want the space for pretty much a one-way trip. Not looks or convenience.

I use them at Christmas when I'm flying from DCA to visit my family in Texas. I'm able to buy gifts little by little and take them all with me that way. On the way back, I load up on special foods I can't get here. I fly SWA, so there's no fee for extra bags. Other than that, I am a 100% carry on traveler.
