How do i get my new puppy to sleep in a crate?

Anonymous
I've read so much advice about this... I think we do want to crate train. But the internet says dont lock the puppy in the crate if it's upset and whenI putt the puppy in its crate it cries. How do I get the puppy to want to be in its crate? Any advice welcome!

IME, puppies have to get used to sleeping alone so there may be some crying. We always keep the crates in a bedroom so there is someone close by. Once they are used to the crate, I’ve never had a dog object to it. And I’ve never had a puppy take longer than a couple days of days to get used to it.

Crate in bedroom
Put puppy's favorite person's worn t-shirt in crate for scent
Put a dog-bed in crate
Lure puppy into crate with treat
Put towel over top and sides to make dark

This is the way.

throw treats in crate
leave crate open
puppy will go in and get treats
allow him to go out
Repeat over and over good treats

Ultimately
close the door and then let him out
do this over and over
increase the time
give him a nice chewing treat

give him attention when he is quiet
ignore when he whines

This takes time but there are plenty of videos out there Zak George Victoria Stillwell

Don't crate your dog too long at first

All of the above. I also only give high-value chews in the crate only - kongs, lick mats, popsicles, billy sticks, marrow bones (for older pups). First, because most of those are kind of messy, second - crate is a happy place where good things happen.
