Is this a Job? Store Organizer?

Anonymous
Just left a small town department store that was a disorganized mess - jumbled merchandise, messy displays and racks.

I’d love nothing more than to straighten up, re-stack, re-fold and organize each rack and display as my sole duties. Is this an independent contractor-type
job that exists? I’ve done retail merchandising but was limited to employer- specific vendors within stores - like Levi’s for instance.

Any ideas or insights? The store where I was shopping today had 2 cashiers who seemed to be covering several departments.

That job doesnt exist. Too expensive. Cashiers have to also organize in their free moment. Maybe the closing shift sorts everything out before they close.

It kind of exists -- the look of a store is attended to by the visual merchandising manager. But that tends to focus on things like window design and showing merchandise through store layout. Sounds like you are familiar with that though, as you know that is an in-house position. Stuff just being a mess means that the store is so understaffed that the staff can't get to everything they need to get to, and things like cleaning and "go backs" (putting merchandise back where it belongs when someone tries it on and doesn't buy it, or leaves it somewhere it does not belong or it gets returned) are not at the top of the list. If the store can't afford enough staff to keep the floor out of that sorry state you saw yourself in, they certainly aren't going to be hiring someone to come in and "organize it" only to have the customers (and staff?) destroy it again within a week. Hell, when I worked retail at a Tysons Mall store, we could open with a beautiful store and have it utterly trashed by evening if it was a busy time of year.

Have you considered being a professional organizer / organizing homes? That’s a job that exists.

Pottery Barn/Williams Sonoma etc. have what I believe they call the "One Team". They handle inventory, merchandising, store displays, turning over stores seasonally, actively restocking etc.

They rotate between stores or if multiple stores in close proximity they may be cover the same cluster on a daily basis.
