Ancestry DNA

Does anyone regret doing this or have concerns? I love researching geneology but I've stayed away because of concerns about security and possibility of the info just not being really accurate. But they are having a great sale now, so...

I did both ancestry and 23 and me. No regrets. I can't say I found any new information, but it was still interesting to get the results and not get any real surprises.

I now have very weird mixed feelings about my info being "out there." Because that is what it is. Nothing is private anymore, everything is a commodity -- and we all walked right into this one.

Non-zero risk of finding illegitimate relatives. Already two in my extended family.

I've talked to one elderly affair baby cousin. She said her married parents used to fight a lot. She thought her younger brother might be an affair baby. Turns out it was her. Bio dad was mom's married boss. She met him a couple times when he and his wife came to her house for dinner.

Also cheating with next door neighbor on the in-law side.

Choose wisely.

Not everyone did…

I considered this a couple of years ago. I asked about it here and the responses convinced me not to.

I don't want my information out there.
My brother and I know of one half sibling who is the result of an affair. I don't want to know if there are more.

My curiosity has never been enough to overcome my certainty that my information will quickly and permanently become the property of a handful of massive corporations. No thanks.

OP here - DCUM, you never disappoint! Thank you!

You can decline wanting to be matched with genetic relatives.
If you want to spend on a test, do Color. It's actually potentially lifesaving because you find out about health traits.

We did it, looking for a specific relative - my Dh's birth father. What we found was a huge number of distant relatives, many of whom were also looking for an elusive dad, grandmother, sister. No one could help us in our search and we could not help them. It was kind of tragic. Also a total waste of time.

No regrets. Seriously what is the paranoia? The world has much much bigger problems that will get us long before dystopian fever dreams.

PP. It's Pandora's box. Once opened, hard to decline to know all. But like the fable, hope is in there after the dust settles.

PP again. Are you looking for Old Country (European) people? If so, port your results to MyHeritage. You can also try the Search Angel community.

And, there are more and more results aggregating yearly.

I did it and so grateful. I leaned so much about my family history that would have been lost otherwise. There were big secrets. The research helped me see my family in a new lens.
