So My DD has a TikTok account, she is 16 and she been getting tons of "Fentanyl has been found in all kinds of drugs in VA".

The ads seems very racist, she reports she seen over 7 different acts and all of them are the blacks kids...
Is anyone else reporting this?

is everyone getting the same ads?

We are black, and my dd knows about the dangers of being any kind of street drugs, but is evereyone getting the same ad ?

Are you reporting them because you think they’re racist?

I just visited their website and Instagram and while Black people may be over represented, they feature other races/ethnicities in the photos too.

no I am not reporting them thinking they are racist. I am wondering if my daughter is just getting black kids on the ads because they know she black?

We all know how TikTok knows everything about us and maybe that why.

It could be, there are algorithms. I would try not to take it personally, it’s a public health campaign aimed at saving lives. She may fit a demographic they’re trying to reach, even if she’s not at risk. That said, I believe everyone should have narcan at home.

Yeah, it’s an algorithm based on other things she’s watched. They may not specifically know she’s black, but if the content she chooses often features black creators, or topics commonly of interest or concern to black teenagers, it will serve up ads targeted to her demographic (as they calculate it from her use of the site).

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are several variations of the same ad that are targeted to consumers of different types of content. That’s how these social media sites make their money: by providing information about their users that allows advertisers to target their reach with pinpoint accuracy.

You’re not paying to use the site, because you ARE the product they’re selling.

ads like this usually have several different versions to target different demographics. the ads you're served depend on your browsing history, the trackers collect data and make an educated guess about the viewer's age, ethnicity, social level, etc. the ad server probably guessed that your daughter was black by the content she watched, so it served her an ad with black actors. old people get served ads with old people actors, etc.
