Mid 1400s

Where did your DC submit mid 1400 scores? Did they submit to schools in the T20-T30 range? Think Michigan, Wash U, Emory? If so, what major and what outcomes?

I’m guessing DC is not going to hit 1500 and trying to figure out strategy (including ED)…

A doubt a 1450 ish score would put your DC in the elimination pile at any of those. Personally I’m recommending my DC with similar score to submit everywhere. But I know a lot more about my DC’s whole application than I do about yours. Know one thing about yours: a narrow range of SAT scores. Don’t know grades, rigor, ECs, recs, or any of the other things that go into. The SAT is probably the 5th or 6th most important things they look at AFTER an initial screening. A 1450 shouldn’t eliminate your DC from that initial screen unless GPA doesn’t line up. But it also won’t get you in without the other things. We’re all led to focus on grades and SAT because they are numbers while the other factors can’t be quantified easily. But at many T30 ish schools those soft factors will be more determinative. They’d rather have a 1450 with leadership and real engagement than a 1550 grinder hot boxed into that score.

Very helpful; yes, I think grades and ECs line u and also recognize the “reachiness” of all these schools. Just trying to figure out if it’s overall helpful or not (on the margins) to submit such scores.

DC had a 1450 with grades that that lined up (most rigorous classes, mostly As). Did not do well with admissions. Rejected from Maryland and I think it was a mistake to submit scores as they seem hyper focused on raising their test scores. Waitlisted at Michigan. Did not apply to Emory or Wash U but I think one would need ED to have a chance of getting into those - DC tried both test optional and providing scores to a number of schools of that caliber, all RD, and was rejected from all.

I’m so sorry to hear this- insane that your DC was rejected from Maryland with these stats. I hope they got into some schools they are excited about!

May I ask if they were applying to STEM majors?

What is their major and how many other kids applied to UMD from your child's school with better grades, scores and extra curr. They only take in so many kids from each school.

Seems like many kids from DC are accepted to MD with much worse stats than MD residents (at least MoCo MD).

Wonder if competition is much less because it is local and OOS…though overall quite reasonable for a DC resident with TAG.

Kid with 1450 took the ACT and scored way better there. Depending on the kid’s strength and weakness they may do better in one over the other.

I'm interested in OP's original question so before the thread becomes completely University of Maryland dominated, for folks with kids who are seniors this year, did they submit mid 1400s to schools in the T20-30 range? What was the major and outcome?

My kid who had better scores than that got WL to the T15-T20 (WashU, Rice) but accepted to T10s.
Nothing is predictable.

It depends on the major and how many kids apply from the child’s school.

1430 in-state Michigan accepted. Submitted to Cornell state-related (legacy) waitlisted. Accepted to three other flagships.

For Michigan, suggested high demonstrated interest [go to webinars, meet admissions rep, and no generic reasoning (like football, etc.)].

1420 did not fare well. Purdue waitlist was the best offer. I would say target large publics T50. For unpopular/non-impacted majors you could shoot higher.
