struggle to read music sheet

Anonymous
My son can't read music sheet, and so do no one in family can. He is afraid that he may fail the music class at school, and it is part of curriculum. Any books to teach how to memorize & read music note sheet.

No one knows how to play instruments. He needs to learn how to read music sheet & he is required to pick a musical instrument to learn next grade by curriculum. I have an electronic keyboard & guitar sitting in basement decades ago, and I forgot how to read it.

Any beginner book or video recommendation is helpful. Thanks.

Your child is in elementary school? They're not going to fail music. Email the teacher and tell them they just don't get it and ask for help/recommendations.

Is he supposed to read the music now or next school year? They teach note reading while they teach how to play the instrument. A private teacher will also teach note reading and how to play the instrument. A private teacher is helpful but not necessary.

There are apps which will help him memorize notes. They are like flashcards.

My kids haven't used them in many years so I don't have a name to recommend but you can probably just search for some in the app store. He should do a little each day and build up speed.

What are the instrument choices?

If violin (or most other string instruments) I think he only needs to be able to read treble clef. Piano you need to read both.

Music note flash cards. It’s pure fluency like learning math facts, you won’t learn if you don’t do it often.

Learn yourself first or learn together with your son so you can help him in some way. Our piano teacher recommended the following books (there are 3 books you can get 1st then the rest 2 later), for note reading.

Can you share more about what the games are like? And is it geared really just for piano students? I looked and there isn’t much info on the actual content online that I can see.

Except that you also have to be able to convert the symbols of the notes to something meaningful. If a child has dyscalculia, they might not be able to do it.

That’s a completely different skill set than just reading music. If they can’t translate what’s written into a musical instrument then they should try percussion or stick with sports.

If you google the book title ( John Thompson
Theory Drill Games Set 1: Early Elementary Level (John Thompson's Piano Series) image you can see some sample pages. It uses cdefgab ( a different system is do ri mi fa so la ti ), each note has different location, also music symbols and time signatures and more, the games are more like mini writing practice after each section. My kids use the books can read piano, violin and recorder music sheet but we don’t know about other music instruments.

Op here. Thank you. I would love to learn with him together. He cannot read notes & chords. He memorizes the multiplication table by himself, so I think he just needs some help to memorize what those means and the placement. He is intereated in piano because he mentions about it. But he has adhd, so I am not sure if he can sit still for long time. Well, he can sit for hours for boardgames. I am told that he needs to pick a musical instrument next grade, and they are learning how to read music sheets at school now with teachers playing the piano. He cares about his grade, and he has been all As so far. He does not even wants a B or C for music class.
