Grading at Northwestern?

Anonymous
Anyone know if Northwestern has a reputation for tough grading/grade deflation? DC is interested in the school but also knows they want to apply to graduate school so wants to make sure they don't disadvantage themselves by (potentially) going to a place where they will find it very difficult to earn good enough grades to get in...

It depends on the major. I was a STEM major with an English minor. STEM is graded brutally, liberal arts are not. The average freshman GPA in McCormick is like a 2.2. I had the gamut, a senior level STEM class where the class average on our midterm was a 12, and a math class that was graded on a strict thirds curve so a 94 on a midterm turned into a B-.

It really depends on what kind of grad school your kid wants to go to. Despite how tough that was, my classmates all got into grad school, because schools are aware of what NU STEM is like. I got time on lab instruments as an undergrad that some grad students don't get at other schools.

Average McCormick gap is around 3.4, not 2.2 lol

What about Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences? Kid wants to go to med school or (maybe) PA school?

How old are you? If you’re parent age, I am pretty sure your experience isn’t relevant anymore.

Economics has weed out classes.

No worry regarding graduate schools for Northwestern graduates.
