Pompeii

It seems that most people take a train to Pompeii and meet a tour guide just outside the city.

Did anyone take a tour that picks you up in Sorrento and escorts you through Pompeii (and ideally Herculean)?

Please recommend the company if you did this (and were pleased).

On our last trip to Italy, we had good luck finding guides through the rick Steves recommendations

Thank you. I have sent them an email.

When did you tour with them?

I've seen Pompeii and Herculaneum more than a few times now as well as other Roman sights in the vicinity. Doing both on the same day is possible but I'd advise seeing Pompeii + the palace villa at Oplontis. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/article/buried-by-vesuvius-this-ancient-villa-is-overlooked-alternative-to-pompeii

Herculaneum is quite small and only a sliver of the town has been excavated, while Pompeii is an entire town complete with theaters and ampitheaters and forums and many houses. Quite a few houses are open at Pompeii and frankly, I find it more rewarding than Herculaneum.

But the Oplontis villa is different enough and pretty cool to visit.

If you can, it's worth going into Naples for the archeological museum.

I did a day trip from Rome that involved taking a bus down. It was great -- I've been to Italy more than once, and I think my very favorite thing was that trip down to Pompeii. Don't remember the company.

+1 to the museum in Naples and to Oplontis.
The train from Sorrento is slow and not particularly punctual, so depending on your time constraints and budget, you might find the tour from Sorrento more convenient.

Just last summer - we used a bunch of different day trip tour guides/services throughout a 3 week trip to Italy and they were by far the best. Wasn't close.
