Crime outside of DCPS schools - thread moved

Anonymous
I posted a thread re: crime in school zones in this DCPS forum, but it was moved to the local politics forum. A little frustrated as I believe the thread is important for DCPS parents' awareness and comments as it pertains to safety in DC school zones.

Anyhow, if anyone wants to comment, the thread is here.

I agree that this is a DC schools issue. There was a shooting right outside of SWS yesterday as well.

Wow, I had no idea! Thanks for posting this.

I never look in the politics forum. So, I agree it should be here. We need to discuss how to protect students in and around school. I mean a student was shot inside a school while sitting at her desk by a shootout outside the school? What?! How did I not know this? Why is this not getting coverage?

DP agree it should he here as the politics forum is kind of a useless troll show. And yes, the intent of this post is specific to DCPS parents' concerns re: our students' safety.

It should absolutely belong here. If it happened at Jackson Reed it would stay here.

This is horrifying. I can't imagine having my daughter shot while at school!!

Sadly, I think there is not going to outrage about this. If it were to start happening more frequently in Ward 3, we'd hear more about and see more action, unfortunately. I say this as someone IB for Deal and JR.

Agree re: Dunbar, which is sad. Shots fired outside SWS, which is located in a very wealthy part of the Hill, generated quite a bit of talk. But there have been so many shootings around the Hill in the past couple years.

And right where MV P street does recess.

Those families who attend MV P are some pioneers. It’s an open air drug market around there.

Ironically, this is a thread about a thread which itself doesn't belong here.

I am surprised/upset that this was initially removed from this forum. Safe passage to/from school is a huge focus right now, as it impacts so much around mental health, absences and truancy, etc. If any of you have attended or logged on to hear students speak on this topic, they speak about issues with crime on metro, bus, beefs between neighborhoods/schools when traveling, etc Across the board it is shared that students feel that school itself is a safe space, which is why today's incident is so much more shocking and scary.

There were more than a dozen gun shots fired just outside Jackson-Reed last year. The school was put in lockdown. Little outrage and no action. Your hypothesis has already been tested and failed.

There was one thread

https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1094990.page

It's sad that we are so accustomed to gunshots in our city that even when they happen in the vicinity of schools, playgrounds, and sports fields with kids, even striking a kid in the crossfire, there is generally just shoulder shrugging. At least it feels that way.

Frequently the kids involved in shootings have already had prior offences (often with release with little repercussions given our current USAO), have a history of worsening school attendance/truancy, and on and on.

1. And every time there is a shooting near JR there is a 10+ page thread about it in THIS forum.
2. Was a JR student shot?
