What's the MARC train like?

Trying to figure out how to commute when the red line is shut down this summer! I currently take the red line from wheaton to union station. I'd like to avoid driving if possible. Does it make sense to just park in SS and take the MARC train from there? Do you just buy tickets at the station and give to the attendant on board? Are there usually seats available?

You gotta dodge the crazies and excrement at union station, for starters.

MARC is very pleasant. No stopping every 10 feet...This is the Red Line train.. Etc. You already go to Union Station so that is not an issue for you.

Where do you live? Kensington or Garrett Park stations may be better options--easier parking and less crime.

MARC is great. But unfortunately you have to deal with Union Station to ride it out of DC.

Is Union Station STILL so bad.

The original post said he/she already takes the Metro to Union Station, so how would taking the MARC to Union Station be any different? The MARC trains stop at the upper level, which in the morning, at least, is very safe, with commuters hurrying to work after getting off the train. In the evening, there are designated seating areas for MARC ticket holders. Overall much safer and more comfortable than the Red Line (cf. recent turf war shooting at Brookland).

To answer the PP's question: there are automated ticket machines at the SS and Kensington Station. You can also buy a ticket on the train, but you have to pay a hefty penalty.

Really? The Kensington station parking lot is pretty small. I don’t know what time the lot fills but I’ve certainly passed it on weekdays where it appeared to be full.

(Not the OP but was also considering the MARC train as an alternative)
