Twin parents: anyone have luck getting stronger twin in ED, weaker twin in RD?

Anonymous
Anyone with twins have luck with this? Twin one EDs, twin two gets in EA or RD?
I have one twin who is an exceptional candidate 1600/36, unique extracurriculars at a top level, second twin has strong grades but less unique extracurriculars, etc.

Are you asking about sending them to the same school?

Each kid should be able to pick their favorite school from the schools they can get into and afford.

I have heard that colleges often try to take twins. Seems more likely if they both apply ED together though.

OP here. Yes, same school. There are many schools that they would both be happy attending.

You think the second twin would get sibling preference in RD? Doubt it but don’t know.

No, the weaker twin should apply ED.

How would the college know twin #1 was accepted when they look over twin #2's application?

If the twins are certain they want to attend the same college, it's best to have neither apply ED. It's too big of a gamble otherwise.

I’d be concerned the first twin would be deferred based on the second twin if they are both applying ED.

What does your college counselor say? Ours knew which schools DGAF about twins and which might care.

You'd just ED both, but ask the school directly about how siblings are considered. Or use ED to secure a spot for weak twin, and RD to explore options for strong (including sibling's ED).

Even if they got a slight bump for being a twin, it would be much less than the bump for ED.

Have both twins ED to their first choice school. If it happens to be the same one, that's fine.

If they're targeting only Top 10 programs, but they also insist on attending together, I don't see a good argument for ED.

Even if both have 4.0 u/w, 1600/36, and substantial rigor (12+ APs, score of 4 or 5 on a min. of 10 AP tests, by way of example only), there's just no rhyme or reason to the admissions process to get comfortable that BOTH will definitely glide through.

That said, I think all of the Top 5 have R-EA or SCEA options, and there you can take a shot b/c there's no risk that one might get "locked-up" while the other is left out in the cold.

Good luck!

What’s the plan if one isn’t accepted in both the ED or RD rounds?

If they definitely want to go to the same school they’ll need to skip ED. There’s no guarantee they’d both be let in.
