I am seeking information on class sizes for HIGH SCHOOL at the following private and Catholic high schools:
— SJC — Field — Burke — Bullis — Good counsel — Dematha — Bishop O’Connell (DJO) — The Lab School What are approximate or average class sizes at these schools? |
Are you asking about the number of kids per grade or the average number of kids in a given class section, like math or history? |
That’s a pretty broad list, op. I’m a fan of the diocesan schools, but if class size is your top priority, I don’t think they’d be the right choice. My understanding is that DJO would commonly have 25 kids or so in a class, depending on the subject. |
Average number of kids in a given class section I can figure out number of kids per grade from the websites |
It’s also going to vary by the class itself. My freshman has 8 students in math and 15-18 in English, History, and Physics. Language will vary by popularity—they’ll max out Spanish and French and maybe Latin but fewer in Chinese or other less common languages, and smaller as you go up in level.
But our non-Catholic private (not one on your list) has a max of 18 and many are somewhat less. |
Go to US News. |
You can get this from the schools easily enough, whether on their websites, ask a tour guide, or an email to admissions. Obviously it’s going to vary hugely—the Catholic schools have hundreds of students per grade, Field has less than 50. Average class size is going to adjust correspondingly. |
These are all really different schools with very different students profiles and missions so I hope you're not using class size alone as a deciding factor.
Of the Catholics listed here, SJC, GC and DJO all have any very 300 kids per grade (co-ed). DeMatha is about 200 per grade (all boys). Field, Burke and Lab are maybe 50 per grade? Bullis about 250? |
Bullis about 160.

PP here. Thanks, I meant to type 150 as a guess. |
So….to clarify above post again, I am looking for the Average number of kids in a given class section for the high schools that I listed (private and Catholic in DC area). DJO, SJC, OLGC, DeMatha, Buklis, Lab, Field, Burke….
How many kids are sitting in class with one teacher? Obviously it is a range…..but is the range 10-15 students per section? 20-30 students per section? 30-35 students per section? As noted, I can get the size of the grades from the website. Looking for something more akin to teacher: student ratio in the classroom setting. |
Have you toured any of these schools? The average class size was always mentioned at all the events we attended. If it wasn’t mentioned automatically, someone always asked. |
Yeah, student-to-teacher ratios are also promoted heavily generally. Look at their admissions websites or go to Niche or US News to get an estimate . |
Thanks for collecting this information - please post your findings here once you have everything. TIA! |
