Just figured out why I'm so fat

Was chatting with a coworker as we walked into the company kitchen. She took an English muffin, toasted it, then took a triangle of cheese that could be concealed in a palm and spread it on each half before grabbing a glass of water. That is her entire lunch. Meanwhile I eat like a 74 course meal for each meal!

I genuinely did not realize how little some people are eating. And she's not even skinny-minnie - just average, like maybe a size 8 or so.

That’s … how calories work.

I was much heavier before I realized that I didn’t have to eat a big meal for EVERY meal and not every day. I love to eat and binge all the time but the rest of the time I skip meals or eat something small. Is it healthy? Probably not. But I’m able to maintain a healthier weight while not beating myself up for eating a whole bag of salt and vinegar chips.

What did you have for lunch? I'm hungry.

Yes, your lunch should not be as much food as your dinner.

Met a friend at Cava for lunch last week. My bowl was bulging and I added rice, lentils, feta, a side of pita bread and two dressings. Hers was full of greens and I didn’t see a single extra starch-no rice, bread and she had a clear salad dressing of any at all. I was like oh, now I see how that works. She’s petite and compact. I’m post menopausal and weigh 200 lbs. She’s about a decade older in her 70’s.

Also, set mealtimes. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, at a table. No snacking at all hours, because it's hard to keep track of intake. Like sceen time, no food before bedtime, it metabolizes differently.

I know people don't want to hear this, but it really is calories in, calories out. Most people who don't believe this don't know how to count their calories. When you cook your own food, it's actually really laborious to count ALL the calories. BTDT.

The size of your lunch or dinner doesn't matter. It's your total calories. I eat more than half my daily calories after 5pm. But overall, I am not eating more than I burn, so I maintain my weight. When you eat your calories doesn't matter.

Chances are you are not metabolically healthy and would struggle with such a carby, polluted mini meal. Focus on protein and blood sugar and run your own race

The mini meal was not a healthy one, but if OP eats that amount of calories, she's definitely going to lose weight. She might also become prediabetic. Leafy greens and lean protein are important.

I often eat small lunches.

I eat fruit, yogurt, and cereal with nuts for breakfast. Milk in coffee.

Then around 12 I might have an apple, a string cheese, and some almonds on a good day.

If I am WFH I will eat a whole salad with healthy ingredients or a sandwich. But at work, I just power through. I will snack at home before dinner but not gratuitously.

Maybe not. I have an early dinner. We eat around 6/6:30 and I don't eat again until the next morning.

Romaine lettuce, salt & pepper chicken, roasted potatoes. Then about an hour later, I had a bunch of blueberries.
