Career dilemma - put up with 9 months of torture for $3 million?

Anonymous
In a C-suite role at a public company. Have fallen out of favor of the CEO due to an unfortunate set of consequences, and he had "the talk" with me where it was obvious he was encouraging me to resign. but in the course of the conversation, he gave me an out and said it did not need to be right away and we can talk about timing, he mentioned up to 6 months. I have a major stock vesting coming up in 9 months and I broached if I could stay until then. This is substantial, the $3 million vesting after tax will put me at almost my goal retirement net worth. the second option would be to ask him for a severance package which would be around $1.2 milion. he ended the meeting telling me to think about it, initially I thought i just stay for 9 months, work hard and do my best to be a good employee. the money is more than worth it. but now the past couple of days have been torture, the thought of being looked at as someone not wanted and valued, and just here for the money is driving me crazy. I know he is saying OK but he is not going to make it easy for me being in this job and it is not going to be fun. Should I waste 9 months of my life in this scenario or just cut my losses and leave now?

Men have done a lot more for a lot less.

If you'd like a higher motivation, stay the 9 months and donate it all to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or something.

Absolutely! I would put up with 9 months working with a bear and Trump at the same time to get $3million at the end!

Yes. I have done more for less, OP.

I would worry about the boss pushing you out before the 9 months. Try your damndest to get those 3M!

what about the possibility that he would finagle a reason to fire me in the interim anyway and in the meantime i would have lost my mental health and any payout. should I just take the $1.2 million and run?

He literally can't hurt you. Maybe he'll fire you. Don't give him your mental health; make jokes about him with your wife at night. Count the money you're going to give to somebody who needs it. I mean, fck him, really.

you need to take the severance and get out of there. your rumination is at risk of self sabotaging yourself.

Has he actually done anything to you yet or is this torture all in your head?

So it's really $1.8m over the severance package option? Did you actually tell him why you want to stay for 9 months vs. the 6 he offered? If he thinks you are trying to stay to repair the relationship, then it makes sense he's trying to make your life as miserable as possible. But if he's willing to give you 6 months, then I'd think he'd understand why a reasonable person would want those extra three, as long as he knows there's an end date in sight and you're not going to keep playing games.

Lost your mental health seems a bit dramatic.

I have no clue. Meanwhile I have former colleagues laid off after 18 years at a company and they got two weeks severance. I’m sure any of them would have been thrilled to suck it up for 9 months to walk away with $3m plus. Wtf.

I was very transparent with him about the reason (the vesting), and he understood. And i think it makes him look better if i resign rather than him firing me (due to various reasons) so I would guess this is why he is entertaining it. I am just worrying about things/his mood changing.
