How Do You/Your Tenants Pay Rent?

Anonymous
We are renting a house and the landlord has asked us to pay with Venmo. I can do that easily.

We are going to be renting out the house we own (in FCC) in a couple of months. Wondering what is the best option for us to collect rent. My DH wants a check, but he is a boomer accountant and I’m guessing people don’t do that anymore? Venmo like our landlord requested, or something else?

I'm like you, just a regular person renting out a condo I own - and my tenants pay by Venmo.

My daughter pays her landlord using Venmo. I pay my rent using the property management’s online portal.

We have a rental next door and they just bring us a check. I would do Zelle but there are limits on how much you can send at once.

Renter of unit in our house insists on a check, but I've repeatedly suggested Venmo, which would be easier. Most importantly, it creates a records that both parties can easily see, so there's no possible confusion over whether the payment has been made. (With a check, each person has a record only of their own bank account.)

I let my renters choose, but in the 15 years, it’s always been electronic. Real checks don’t even come standard anymore.

Thanks all. Sounds like Venmo is pretty standard.

Zillow has a rental payment platform you can use.

Before I google, is there a fee for using that platform?

We have six sets of tenants and they all pay by PayPal or Venmo now. Less than a year ago we still had one mailing checks. PayPal is better for me because you can transfer into multiple bank accounts and Venmo is just one and then we have to move it into the account we use for the rental business, which is a slight annoyance.

I always insist on security deposit and first month in cash.

After that, I would accept check but prefer he use ACH direct deposit into my account.

I use Zelle.

I use Zelle, there is a 5K limit per day and that's if both people have Zelle at their bank and it may take a day or two to complete. Smaller amounts go in minutes.

Another option is have the bank send a check on a certain date every month. I personally prefer any method that does not rely on the post office to deliver on time and not lose it.
