Virginia prepaid for engineering

Anonymous
We paid for 8 semesters several years ago using the VA prepaid plan.

DC wants to go into engineering and is targeting mainly VA schools.

I know that VA prepaid does not cover the complete tuition for engineering.

Any experience on how the payout is calculated? We are trying to figure out how much we need to save in addition to the prepaid plan if DC gets into one of the more expensive programs.

Thanks!

I believe prepaid covers Tuition+Fees. Additional, department specific fees are not included.

Other than UVA and W&M, prepaid is not a good deal. The costs are lower than what prepaid would pay at the other VA universities. If you are targeting Virginia Tech, you'd be better off moving two years worth of prepaid into a market index fund or a target date fund. You'll get a higher return compared to prepaid.

What about converting it to credits? Is that a better deal?
