Prostate cancer

How treatable is it these days? I assumed it was no biggie, but then I saw OJ Simpson died of it, and one would think he'd have good medical care (maybe). Relative is likely dealing with it, finding out today.

So much depends on the staging, and when it is caught.

It's still #2 for number of cancer deaths for men according to this:

Get your PSA tested starting at 45 NLT than 50. This will help monitor changes and potential disease risks.

My father died from prostate cancer. He was first diagnosed around age 70+ and died at 82. After his first diagnosis, ha had radiation and then, the cancer reoccurred.

My father has it, he was diagnosed in 2018, but likely had it years before; he had high PSA levels in the years leading up to his diagnosis and ignored it until his primary said she wouldn’t keep him on as a patient anymore until he had it checked out.

He had androgen deprivation therapy and now produces zero testosterone. His hadn’t spread beyond the surrounding tissue, so he opted for this “chemotherapy” and radiation. He opted not to have his prostate removed due to his age and the negative side effects. He has his PSA checked every year and so far, it’s still nearly undetectable, thankfully.

I’d be happy to check in on this thread and answer any questions. I remember being terrified and looking for a friend!

Any update, OP? Thinking of you.

Not OP, but have a question. My husband 46yo, our new physician ordered typical blood work at our annual and PSA test too. It came at 1.. i.e. well under 2.5 for his age threshold. However I read that 1 at 46 may be a bit high? Do I need to convince my DH to make an appointment with specialist ( urology?) ?

Do you mind me asking what was his Gleason/stage?
