SJC Placement Test - when hear back

Anonymous
I know I'm being impatient, but at least I'm asking DCUM instead of contacting the school, right?

I don't expect to hear back this week, but I am wondering if the school will send out results two weeks after the placement test or if we should expect it to take longer than that.

I think we got the whole packet last year in mid-May.

Don’t hesitate to call the school with questions.

It’s fine to reach out to the school to politely ask about the timeline for when you can expect to hear back with results. It’s not ok to pester them until you hear something, but don’t be afraid to ask at all.

Does SJC ever consider allowing an incoming student to retake the placement test after a summer booster on the language or math content?

I was not successful. I would guess it is a case by case basis and doesn’t hurt to ask. I did not take it up the line to the principal.

Do you know what the cut score was and how close your child was to it? I’m anxiously awaiting results over here too. Also did you get your child’s full schedule in mid-May?

Who did you talk to?

You’re anxiously awaiting? Cut scores and retakes? I would advise an entirely new approach to high school.

Unfortunately, math dictates the other classes students can take so it is important. What approach would you advise?

*Who would we talk to at the school for this request?

I never saw a score, or the test. They just tell you your kid's placement.

We asked if retaking the test later in the summer was an option and were told no. I also did not push it but suggest you do if needed. It’s much easier to start at a higher level than to move into it from a lower one.

What level math class are you hoping to have your child placed into? My understanding is that they place very few students straight into algebra 2. They have an honors algebra 1/geometry class that my scholars program son took freshman year. In talking to his teacher that year, they want to ensure that there’s a solid foundation of algebra before moving to higher classes. Rising senior will be taking calculus (not sure which one) next year. Please note that they do move students out of the accelerated algebra/geometry class into standard algebra 1 at the semester break and it happened to a couple of his classmates.

Letting your child start in the class he actually belongs in? And accepting that that’s the child you have?

My child graduated a few years ago so this could have changed but basically they received their freshman schedule with the courses at the end of May. No scores from the tests only what class they were being placed in based on the math and foreign language placement test. The class schedule with the time/teachers/class rooms etc. was in August either during orientation or right before.

My child placed into Algebra 1 and had to get a high A (95+) in Algebra 1 in 9th grade, and then they were eligible to take a placement test that evaluated their mastery of Algebra 1 around April of 9th grade. They had to score high enough on that placement test to be offered the opportunity to take the 5 week summer school geometry offered at the school. Then had to pass that summer course with a certain grade in order to take Algebra 2 their 10th grade. This was the only option the school allowed. In the end it worked out. But if my kid hadn’t been a strong math student that already covered most, but not all, the material in 8th grade and if they didn’t have the motivation to get a high A, it would not have worked out.
