Global Entry enrollment at IAD?

Anonymous
Anyone have experience completing their Global Entry enrollment at Dulles, either on arrival or using the newer departure service? Is it first come first serve or do you make appointments? How long is the wait typically? I’m hoping to get it taken care of either before departure on a Sunday afternoon or on arrival on a Saturday afternoon. Not sure how realistic either of those is. Thanks

I was there last weekend with an appointment. Someone tried to do the walk in. She was tole there is a separate spot for the arrival/departure GE (different from the people who have appointments). I believe they said it was in the B gate, but I wasn't paying that much attention. I do remember they said on Saturdays that they don't open until noon so it didn't work for this woman. I'm not sure it they're open on Sundays.

We did it on our arrival back from Spain last month. The program is called Enrollment on Arrival (EOA).

We filled out our applications while in Spain. Three days after submittal we were notified via email of conditional approval. You will need conditional approval before you can do an EOA.

We arrived at IAD and proceeded to the line for EOA. You can ask anyone as you are entering the customs area, and they will point you to the correct line.

The customs officer asked each of us several questions. It took about 5-10 minutes per person. He said we were approved and would receive our Global Entry cards in the mail.

Only one person was ahead of us when we arrived on Sunday afternoon. However, the line for EOA was about 20 deep by the time we finished.

Either way EOA is totally worth it versus spending months trying to find an appointment.

Great, thanks!

Anyone have experience with enrollment on departure? I think Dulles is the only airport with it right now, and only since February.

My wife did this a couple of weeks ago and said it was a bit of a hassle. It was first come first serve and she was stuck there waiting for a while. She said with hindsight it would have been better to get an appointment.

Getting any appointment can take months. Not to mention IF you get an appointment, you have take time out of the day to drive back to the airport, pay for parking and possibly still wait a bit.

I did it in March on my way out of the US. It took me 10 minutes max. Make sure you have all of your paperwork completed and your account has moved to the "interview" stage. There was a women in front of me who thought she could do the application, interview - the entire process upon departure. I gave myself 1.5 hours because I wasn't sure how long it would take, or what the lines might be like. I had the approval and all the details by the time I was onboard my flight. It was so efficient. I highly recommend it - I didn't want to deal with it upon returning to the US and in March I don't think many folks knew you could do it upon departure.

PP here: Its near gate B21 - I did not make an appointment - you can't for the upon departure options. It is first come, first serve. My flight was out of a different terminal so I gave myself enough time to navigate and wait at Global Entry and then move on to my flight gate. I thought it was a great option. I don't know how things will be once the summer travel starts and people start to learn about this option.

Coming in off of a long international flight it was an extra hassle that she did not need. I agree and would prefer the route of selecting an appointment time and heading out there at a time more convenient to me.

The nice thing about this new on-departure Global Entry process is you are already going to the airport - you just have to give yourself extra time. No hassle waiting months for an appointment, no hassle coming back from a long international flight to have to wait for the interview.

OP here. I was able to take care of the enrollment on departure yesterday afternoon before my flight. SUPER easy. Showed up around 3:30 pm, no wait, in and out in ten minutes. I highly recommend this option to anyone. The agent said you can do this enrollment option before a domestic flight, not just international, which makes it a great option. It’s near gate B41 so if you’re not flying out of that terminal give yourself some extra time.

I did upon arrival, and it was actually faster than the regular arrival because a whole bunch of internatl flights had just arrived.

Oh interesting! I was told the opposite in March - but maybe they don't have enough people using the service? I would have told my spouse to do this for their recent domestic travel when their flight was delayed for hours. Oh well. I was impressed with the service.
