Suits for Athletic Boy

Anonymous
I am really struggling to find a good-fitting suit for my son. He does have a very nice one but the issue is that it is tight across the back.
He is 5'10" and 160 lbs. His 38R jacket gives him little to no room to reach across his body. Fits fine when he stands still.
We have a 40R jacket but even though it is a slim cut it is not slim enough as he has a 29'' waist.

I can't be the only one struggling. Where do I get a nice suit for a broad backed, slim teen? I have a feeling alternations are in my future but any tips for a OTR suit would help.
Maybe he just needs a suit with stretch.

Thanks!

Get the 40R and have it altered.

I have a different problem - my son needs a 36L jacket and I’d buy the 38L and have it altered but those are also impossible to find.

My son is also very athletic with big arms, shoulders and thighs. I've seen some online options with stretch fabrics, but DH thinks those fabrics are too cheap for a nice suit, and they are fairly expensive anyway. Suit Supply will mix & match jacket and pants sizes and alterations are included in the price. This has been our solution.

Thanks. That is what I was dreading. We do own a 40R so guess it is time for alterations. Now I just need to find a good tailor.

Good luck on your 36L hunt.

Thanks. I agree with your husband on the stretchy fabric and suits.

Never heard of it but will check out Suit Supply. Thanks.

DS is a swimmer so I feel you.

Went to Mens Wearhouse. Got a 38R and had it tailored to fit in the waist. Had to get 30 pants to accommodate thighs, and have the waist taken in.

Check out eurobrands or even Jcrew. Their slim cut is extra slim. Even if you still need to alter, the less they have to take in, the better it will look when done.
