blood in urine

Anonymous
Yes, I am freaking out a bit. It's visible, like I had a period, but I have been in menopause for several years and it's definitely in my urine.

A few months ago I had a very small (1cm) Stage 1 invasive breast cancer - no lymph node involvement. Seems crazy that I could also have bladder cancer at the same time without any indication of metastases?

I have mildly high calcium due to a parathyroid adenoma and possibly some low T4 results in the context of normal TSH.

Am I overthinking this - could it be normal UTI? (Never had one before). Vitamin deficiency?

OFC I will go to doctor tomorrow (I don't think I have to go to ER?), but appreciate any insight before then.

It is good to check, but there may be nothing wrong. It is not uncommon among post-menopausal women.

Do you smoke? I read in a book about cancer years ago that bladder cancer is virtually only found in smokers.

no, never been a smoker, so that's helpful!

Are you using vaginal estradiol without any progesterone? If so, that can cause bleeding.

You might have a UTI as you mentioned.

And, yes, cancer is sadly one concern.

I’m glad you’ll go to the doctor and hope you are okay.

I mean UTI is the obv answer and you can get an OTC test at CVS.

I never used vaginal hormones. A month ago I took about 2 weeks of letrozole for long term hormone therapy to prevent cancer recurrence. It's supposed to deprive your body of all estrogen. But, it made me very thirsty so on doctor's I stopped it 2 weeks ago.

I'm sure my body is experiencing, relatively, a surge of estrogen to my normal post-menopause level, but could that be the cause?

Make an appointment with an obgyn or PCP to discuss. I’m sorry you are dealing with this.

Pls go. I hope they rule out all issues (minimal to large). I’m so glad you are seeing doctor. My Mom ignored this in her 70s (much older than you) and it’s always good to go if blood is in urine.

Good to know. My Mom sadly had this symptom and ignored a few months. A past smoker (had quit decades ago). She unfortunately had bladder cancer. OP is much younger and going to and—so good call! Hope just a beneign cervical polyp or nonsuch.

There are so many things it could be, most much more common than bladder cancer. The best thing you can do is go get it checked out -- most likely it is not a big deal and you'll be able to sleep better knowing what it is. And in the unlikely event it's something big, early diagnosis is always the best option, so you can at least know you did well by yourself.

I get very nervous about going to get medical issues checked out for the same reason (what if it's the worst possible thing? or even a slightly less bad thing that is still a huge pain to deal with?). But I alway make myself go and I never, ever regret it. This is what doctors are for! We are so lucky to have them.

See your PCP. Get a urinalysis and urine culture. Should have an ultrasound of kidneys and bladder. Should see a urologist. Maybe kidney stones from the hypercalcemia. Maybe a UTI. Maybe bladder cancer, but would consider other 2 more likely.
