DC—> St Louis: where to stop on the way?

Anonymous
We’re planning to drive from DC to St Louis and I’m looking for fun stops along the way. Anyone have a favorite park in Kentucky or other ideas?

Are you looking for a quick stop or an overnight? You could go through New River Gorge and go rafting, depending on how old your kids are.

Nowhere. Don't even stop in St Louis - just keep going to somewhere better.

I’m currently looking for all of the above. Interesting places up to half an hour out of the way that might be a short stop or good place to eat. Or a place for a half day break. Or maybe an overnight.

You can do this drive in a day which I suggest because it’s so effing boring, especially the southern route.

New River Gorge is a decent stopping point but nowhere near halfway. Indianapolis has some good things for younger kids.

New River Gorge definitely fits then, pretty close to being right on the way. The Indiana/Illinois part is pretty boring, although I did enjoy Cahokia - but you are almost there at that point.

Thank you! This is an excellent idea! We love national parks.

Log Inn in Evansville, Indiana is fun - one of the oldest stagecoach stops in the USA. Abraham Lincoln has been a guest, and it was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Decent family restaurant.

You could also stop by the Kentucky Derby Museum in Louisville. I also enjoyed the St. Louis Art Museum. Also in St. Louis, stop by Fitz's Delmar for root beer and get barbecue at Pappy's Smokehouse.

This is close to St. Louis, so not really on the way, but the old downtown of St. Charles is kind of interesting to walk around. There is a decent hotel on the street so that you don't have to drive to the area if you stay there.

We’ve been surprised at the number of good restaurants in St Louis but you do sometimes need to reserve in advance.
