How to wean off supplementing formula

Anonymous
I was on a triple feeding protocol to get my supply in and up but baby is now 2 weeks and we've gotten in the habit of topping off with formula. Nursing on demand but I'm trying to figure out the best way to test out if we can ease up on the formula even if that means feeding more frequently

Would I only supplement every other feeding? And see how that goes or try a day where we just nurse and see? We can get a scale for weighed feedings and we know the satiety cues and to look for pee diapers. I guess baby would just tell us by crying and not being calm but how do we know for sure we can stop or ease up on the supplements?

Talk to your pediatrician. This is not something to play around with. Feed your baby. Fed is best.

If you're gonna cold turkey it, plan on planting your butt on the couch and doing nothing but nursing all day.

I had to do that anyway with my babies at that age until they were 6 weeks, and by all measure I was a wildly successful nurser.

We asked at the two visit and they just said nurse more and give the bottle less.

A lactation consultant will be able to walk you through this, and it will be covered by your insurance.

When your baby is more robust, and you reached the first eight milestones, and breakfast feeding is easier, you can probably stop and see where it takes you.

I had to supplement my first several weeks, but by several months baby wasn't taking formula at all.

I was similar to you with two kids…I would just stop the formula one day and see how it goes. See if baby just feeds a little more frequently but otherwise seems content and is still peeing/pooping plenty. If they have nursed for one or two long sessions and still seem hungry, top them off. You can then always cut back more gradually. Good luck!
