Is this normal for travel tryouts.

Tryouts were split between multiple fields for each travel team. Newcomers were placed on the lowest field. My son was eventually moved up two fields, but was not offered a spot for any team.

Normal, most teams are almost full with previous players.

Seems extreme. Sometime clubs just get too many kids to offer everyone a spot. Or, did you do all 3 tryouts and have you waited 48 hours past the last tryout yet? It could be the offer is still being worked out?

If you think they moved him up to scrimmage with a more competitive group, it seems probable that they would send an offer. If he really wants to play, I would contact the coach in a few weeks and ask if he can attend a practice. If the coach thinks the player is a good fit, the coach can send an offer the next day.

It’s worth following up to get feedback on what they saw. But yes, normal.

Shocking they didn't offer him a spot on *any* team. So many clubs have 4+ 5+ 6+ teams deep, they are what we call revenue teams: parents want their kids to play travel, even though in reality they aren't good enough, but they sure do generate revenue for the club

Worth following up. We had a similar experience, and learned that our DC slipped through cracks between two coaches trying to figure out where to place them.

When was the last tryout?

Keep in mind there's already an existing team in place. Unless those kids are worse or leave the team, your kid has to beat them out considerably to take their spot.

Yes, normal. They players they already had committed to come back, and are at least approximately as good as your child.

It sounds unusual to me if your kid was moved "up" into more competitive groups during tryouts yet did not get an offer for any team. It's possible that they are still sorting things out and an offer may be in the works; or perhaps as someone mentioned he may have inadvertently slipped through the cracks.

In any case, making a call to the club to ask about it is a good idea.

He was probably a backup in case a kid on the second team left

This is how SYC does their tryouts. They are grouped by level and will move players around. Based on the tryout last week for the 2011, the first team is already set, and they did not have any new players join that group.

You have to also remember over half the kids that come to the tryouts are current players so coaches already know where their placement will be.

I'd definitely follow up, that happened to my kiddo once and apparently they were "forgotten" by accident...

I got an e-mail saying they tried to put everyone in a position to be evaluated thoroughly. However, there was no line about being rejected. This could easily have been sent for my other kid who made a team. I asked whether this was a rejection, and was told to ask someone else. I'm going to leave it at that since I wasn't planning on accepting an invite, but it seemed unusual that he didn't make a lower (moneygrab) team.

Wait, that's wild. The person who sent you the email wouldn't tell you if it was a rejection or not?
