Is Gonzaga the it school this year for boys?

Anonymous
It seems everyone I speak to is going there next year or applying. Is it that great?

Felt like that last year too when about eight boys from our public middle school school went there.

No, only if you can't afford elite private or dislike public.

It's Catholic, not private and it's half the price of the privates. It's the school for super athletes whose parents are Catholic or don't mind a catholic education.

It's still not cheap at $33k/year and no sibling discounts.

I think as the publics go more off their rockers, Jesuit seems relatively mid-center between liberal-conservative the way things are these days. It's traditional, but also progressive.

It has a reputation of being very strong academically, but likes a varied student body. The kids in AP/honors can compete and get into the same schools as other privates.

Colleges view it in the "very rigorous/no grade inflation' category and it's AP exam '4-5" score rate is very high.

Jesuit education is strong. Georgetown, Notre Dame, Boston College, Villanova, etc have also had a big surge (always popular---but even more in this day and age as people turn away from the Ivies).

Many people like single-sex education. Many more even like "Jesuit education". If you know, you know.

You’d have to come from a fairly conservative background to think a Catholic education at both the high school and college level is preferable to a top public or private plus Ivy education. I do realize Trumpists are all about bashing Ivies these days to appeal to populist sentiments and Jewish voters, but even so relatively few are going to confuse Notre Dame with HYP or BC and Villanova with Dartmouth or Brown.

Just in case you needed a reality check.

Strong admits to ND, GU & BC (the new ivies 😉).
DS is going to one of these and I think Gonzaga helped the way.

"top public" is the key here. DC area has some very good publics, but nothing that would go down on the list of "top publics" nationwide. Also, as good as they can be, public schools still have a healthy demographic of kids that are there because they have to be and is going to have larger class sizes. If your kid needs smaller class size and you're looking to put them in an environment where they get more attention and are surrounded by people who have opted-in (or who will be ushered out if they don't play along), Gonzaga is a cheap alternative to the big privates.

You’re really misunderstanding things. Ivy isn’t desirable for everyone or even most people. Just in case you need a reality check.

Nah, we’re “Catholic for the in-parish tuition” level Catholics and think Jesuit schools (I’ll speak to Gonzaga/BC) really teach the idea of looking out for and learning about others in a way you probably don’t get at your grassy knoll privates. I’m sure no one misses us at Princeton, etc., but people look for different things.

Villanova and Notre Dame are not Jesuit.

2 sentences. 2 thoughts. Thus the “also” in the second sentence.
