Life While Awaiting Trial

There is a local trial that is kicking off this week (Karen Read in suburban Massachusetts) and she sounds like she was fairly successful professionally before her boyfriend died and she was charged with his murder.

Setting aside any sort of commentary about the case, how does one go two years in limbo? Does your job fire you? Do you liquidate your 401k and savings? Do you rack up credit cards? How do you pay your mortgage? How can you afford to pay for your attorney fees if you’re not working?

Why do you assume the person is not working? There was a case in my neighborhood where a woman (Dianna Lalchan) shot her husband to death in 2013 and wasn't convicted until 2019, and she kept working as a pharmacist for the federal government the whole time. Her conviction was later overturned (no question that she shot him, just whether it was self defense) so she's been released.

I was a newspaper reporter for 15 years and covered criminal court for probably half that time so saw a lot of criminal trials play out over years from arrest to conviction or ocaisionally acquittal. I was say either you are in jail awaiting trial or if you bond out you move in with family and they completely circle the wagons on you.

Yes to liquidating 401K, racking up debt, etc. By any means necessary.
