Another what book

Would have read it over 20 years ago, I think, and a big and sad reveal is that someone was in left turn lane and had wheels turned left and not straight so when they were hit from behind, the car went forward and turned into oncoming traffic. I oddly remember nothing else about that book, but so now never pre-turn my steering wheel when in left turn land in case hit from behind. Anyone recall what book this was in?

A Widow for One Year by John Irving. I think of that car accident scene every time I am waiting to turn.

THANK YOU. I have tried to search for it in random google searches but without more info even adding “book” I never found it. THANK You. Recently it has been bothering more that the scene made a huge impact on me and same as you at intersections but I couldn’t remember the book. I may have blocked it as it really was big emotions when I read it. Thank you!!!!

I just started to doubt myself because The World According to Garp by the same author also has a car crash in it. I’m pretty sure it’s A Widow for One Year since the Garp car crash was more absurd if I recall correctly. I know it’s a John Irving book for sure!

This is also why I don't pull out into the intersection while waiting for the opportunity to turn left - you are just exposing yourself to any possible accident that can take place during the 30 seconds you are waiting. I stay behind the line. Learned that in a superb driver's ed course in California. You can honk all you want. I've never been in an accident and have never caused one.
