I developed a UTI last week that felt extreme to me- blood, excruciating pain, horrible pressure. Went to doctor, got the antibiotics, and things started to feel better. Then today things took a turn and the burning is coming right back. I’m on day 5 of 7 for the antibiotics but this doesn’t feel like it’s going away. Did anyone have a UTI that just lingered?? I’ve only had two before and they resolved really fast after I started the meds. |
Probably not what you want to hear, but you’re going to need a stronger antibiotic. Hope you feel better soon! |
Did they do a culture and make sure that the antibiotic that was prescribed was effective at treating the bacteria you have? You might not be on the right antibiotic. |
Culture
Wrong antibiotic. OP please go to a different Uro bec your stinks. |
Crap. I was afraid of that. I’ll call tomorrow. |
That is not true. You can empirically treat for a UTI. The antibiotic chosen is sometimes resistant. If you didn’t already, so a culture. As for stronger antibiotic, that is not necessarily true either. You need an antibiotic which is appropriate for the bacteria in your urine. |
Clarification- this does not mean that the soctor stinks. OP never mentioned a urologist. Probably PCP or GYN. |
OP here. I went to my PCP. It’s the same antibiotic she prescribed before. But I’ll call again tomorrow. |
I had a long summer of constant UTIs and the antibiotics were getting to me. Swapped to D-Mannose + Cranberry - triple dosages at forst and lots of water, once the last was finished I have added Pure brand D-Mannose and cranberry as a daily supplement - and double up if I’ve been dehydrated or feel any mild hint of a UTI. Try it- |
Honestly the only thing that works for me is Monurol. |
This won’t help for your current infection, but my doctor told me to cut out gluten and I have not had a UTI since. Interestingly, gluten doesn’t cause GI effects for me. |
What was the culture result?
I seem to always get started on Macrobid. After the culture returns I might be switched depending what's happening. Last time I wound up on Cipro even though the culture showed that the bacteria should have been taken care of by Macrobid. I was on Macrobid for a week without improvement, but Cipro wiped it out in less than 2 days. |
I have also been given Cipro for UTIs and it works quickly and always knocks them out, but Cipro is now supposed to be a last resort antibiotic. You should do some reading on the warnings. It can cause serious issues including tendon rupture.

Thank you - that’s good (and scary) to know about Cipro. |
Make sure you take probiotics too. It’s a good idea anytime you have to take antibiotics, but especially important if you’re switching. You can get OTC probiotic supplements or use food sources like yogurt, kefir, fresh sauerkraut (making it shelf-stable kills the probiotics - Trader Joe’s sauerkraut is great), or kimchi. I try to get a variety of sources.
Once, when I had an infection that the first antibiotic didn’t work and they switched me to another, I ended up with problems on both ends. The doctor surmised that what gut bacteria had survived the first round of antibiotics got wiped out by the second. I hope your doctor is able to subscribe a more effective antibiotic and you feel better soon. |
