High School Rosters v Playing time

Anonymous
Went to my first HS JV and Varisty games this weekend.

I didn't notice this has dramatically on the JV game but the Varsity game had 32 (or 34?) rostered and I think 13 played. One kid got subbed on after a player got a yellow card and played maybe 20-30 seconds before being subbed off.

Is that typical to have such a large roster but only play less than half the roster? Game tied 1-1.

I have heard that high school coaches who also coach club soccer have rules about the percentage of players from their club team they can have on their high school roster or something like that. Has anyone else heard this? If true, maybe this impacts the high school roster size?

High school soccer is pretty terrible style of play. It is like a bunch of long ball boots all game.

And it's always the same kids in their playing? Even with the LARGE roster?

It is weird the starters on our V are either seniors or freshman. The seniors are playing like they are the only one on the field (the individual wants all the glory and ignores passing opportunities and just tries to score from the 40 yard line) and the freshman are frustrated because they haven't played soccer this way since they were on rec.

The coaching is bad. It is all bad.

I could have written this post - exact same experience on our Varsity team.

Roster size, quality of play, quality of coaching, playing time, etc. will vary for high school to high school. Generally, as noted by other posters, it is not good soccer

These comments always crack me up. Where do you think these HS players come from? Have you watched travel games. MOST are the same thing. Very few travel teams play with patience. Watch a NCDL D1 game. Horrendous soccer. Watch EDP. Horrendous except for the top teams in the top divisions. HS doesn't make these players bad...they are just bad players playing HS. It's just not possible to have a HS team of all ECNL/MLS/GA players. Of course, not all of these players are perfect but the difference between these players and most other travel players is quite large.

As to the OP's question, the roster size and subbing is up to the coach. Some coaches just don't like to cut players so they'll carry a large roster and tell some kids...you will not see the field and the kids are OK with that because they just want to be on the team and represent their school and do bus rides and be part of something...maybe for resume building, who knows? Most teams I've seen will play 15-18 kids; however, I'm not surprised that there are a few coaches that will only play 12-13 basically to sub in for yellow cards depending on which position is being replaced.

Coaches don’t want to hear all the whining from parents when their kid doesn’t make varsity, so they let lots of kids in, and then don’t play them. Much easier for the coaches.

As for quality of play….my son has steadily moved up from lower leagues to ECNL, and this is the first year that I thought his club team played a significantly better style than his school team. As PP said, most club teams aren’t as good as you think.

I've watched a lot of club games and most of those teams will out play a HS team if you take away size and speed. IQ is low from the coaches and players. What I have observed is that they play the "top" players (i.e. high level club players) in positions that isn't there normal positions because HS coaches think a soccer player is a soccer player. There is no building, just boot and scoring is a result of a break away. I don't talk to other parents because for some, HS is the pinnacle of their soccer experience and I don't want to rain on their parade.
