What is a safe distance from a major airport? If I buy a house 2.5 mi from Dulles, I am worried I'll be exposing my family to VOC's. If I buy a house further out, say in Lansdowne, I will be 45 min from my job and kids schools. Anyone know the dangers/ risks? |
Danger is everywhere OP there is no escape. |
If you do a search online you’ll see research that identifies the 10- mile airport radius as the problem. Look for neighborhoods beyond that radius. |
There is no place in the entire DC area (or any other large city, for that matter) that is safe for you. None. Zero. You’re asking for the impossible.

Montana |
Montana is covered with farms. Have you ever lived near a farm? |
Jets overfly 90+% of the country. You will never be further than 10 miles from an aircraft. |
I'd be more annoyed by noise pollution. In HS I lived less than a mile from BWI and every 10 minutes a plane would rumble overhead. We learned to better secure photos hanging on the walls. It was almost like living at Gravelly Point. |
I'm not sure if you're being intentionally dense? |
It's hard, OP. And once you factor in being a safe distance from major highways, gas stations, dry cleaners, etc., there are very few places you can live in the DC area! |
Nope. Just illustrating absurdity by being equally absurd. People who think they’re being exposed to some kind of hyper lethal pollution by living within 10 miles of an airport need supportive psychiatric care. |
