Virginia Beach

What's Virginia Beach like in the summer? I'm looking for somewhere beachy for me and DH but not a boardwalk packed with families.

Any recommendations that fit the bill?

I’ve only been to VA Beach a couple times, so I’m not an expert. That said, downtown VA Beach where we stayed last year, is very loud and kind of a “scene.” These are the hotels that are on the boardwalk. Once again, lots of people, lots of motorcycles and sports cars cruising, and lots of noise. This part reminded me of OCMD.

The north part, looks a little more tame. This is the area around the Cavalier- big Marriott resort. From here north to the bridge tunnel it’s not as touristy or as crowded.

To the south is Sandbridge. I’ve heard good things, but never been.

Go to Dewey instead.

Stay near the cavalier and it’s full of families.

Stay at the Cavalier Resort. There are families but not nearly as many as other hotels in the area. You will also get access to their Beach Club.

Virginia Beacb is either ratchett or full of families. No in between. If you don't want either, don't go to VA beach.

What is "ratchet?"

What is "ratchet?"

https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/ratchet/

Ratchet is a slang term that can mean “exciting” or “excellent,” often used as a term of empowerment among women. Some may also use ratchet for when they are feeling “bad” in some way.

The term has been previously used, however, as an insult characterizing a woman as being “overdramatic” or “promiscuous.”

My mother lives in Virginia Beach and I was just there for the weekend. Virginia Beach is fine with lots of things for kids and families to do if you know where to go.

1) stay in the north end. There are plenty of short term rentals, many should have all of the beach stuff already there (buggy, chairs, umbrella, etc). There are no life guards in the north end. The beach is super wide. This is where the locals and families go. DO NOT STAY IN A HOTEL ON THE BOARDWALK. I would also avoid the Cavalier and the new Marriott because it's close enough to the boardwalk for the noise and riff raff. Don't stay at the Wyndham (the old school ramada) just because it's in the North end. It's not very nice. Just rent a house.

2) The only reasons to go to the "downtown area" would be to go play putt putt or glow in the dark mini golf, playing on the Neptune playground at Laskins or make a trip to WRV. Everything else you could need can be found on the quieter Bay side off of Shore Drive (which is close if you're staying in the North End). Nice restaurants, Taste, ice cream, grocery store, CVS, etc. are all off of Shore Drive, with lots of parking. Downtown and the boardwalk are overpriced and for tourists (and the food isn't good). Off of Shore is where locals go, food is good.

3) things for kids off the top of my head: the aquarium, Flight, mini golf, the children's museum and sports hall of fame (I think those are in Portsmouth), and the inner harbor in Norfolk has a ship you can tour which is huge and lots of things for kids to run around and touch.

I never go to the boardwalk area. The Virginia Beach I am used to is completely different than what other posters may describe. You can have a perfectly fine vacation there.

We stayed at a boardwalk hotel last year, and I would not recommend. Really crowded and at night the main drag in front of the hotel was like a drag strip/night club. Not my kind of scene.
