William and Mary

If you have a dc at William and Mary (or a recent grad)—how was it socially? Academically? Thanks for any info and your impressions!

Recent grad. Perfect fit for my kid. Will have lifelong friends from college. Very close relationship with professors. Could not be happier with his experience!

All of this for my soon to be junior. Nice kids, very rigorous academics. But even though my kid tends to be too academic/ nerdy in HS and to not have enough fun (although COVID didn’t help), she’s having a blast. She’s grown so much- socially, intellectually, as a person. Making very smart social and anemic decisions. And really pushed herself to try new things and put herself in new situations. She made a very wise choice for college. Am I am WM booster? Heck yes. But I want two years ago. I’m just very impressed by what I’ve seen from the school.

This was recently asked and answered. Conduct a search.

W&M is discussed ad nauseum on this forum. Look it up.

There are many discussions about this school already.

New poster. Thanks; this is great to hear as our kid has to decide this week!

My son is finishing his freshman year. He's been very happy there. Studies hard, but is very low stress about grades. Involved in several student groups, so stays busy. The students are very smart, involved, nice. He's got a nice group of close friends. Plenty of parties to go to when he wants. Loves having Wawa next to campus.

Wawa! I’m not sure why or how, but a huge part of the WM experience. (Also apparently the only Wawa in the US that does sell gas. My DD is a non-drinker and does nerf club Sat nights instead of parties (100 kids with nerf guns take over different academic buildings for elaborate games— nice socializing for kids who don’t want to party). But then heads to WaWa at 1 am to hang with nerf kids and some of her drunk friends who are coming from parties. And loves it. SMH.

Very true. My kid is working very hard. Double major that includes IR and not for the faint of heart. And there are some Bs mixed in. But there isn’t the constant worry about grades we saw in HS. It’s nice to see the enthusiasm for learning and the content of the classes rather than the constant obsession about the grade in the class. IMO, much healthier.

My child graduated recently and had a great experience. Joined a service fraternity, participated in intramural sports, made what seem to be lasting and substantial friendships, and used a comp sci minor to land a lucrative IT role with a seemingly bright future with a F150 employer. Was able to find a good balance between academics and social life. No apparent regrets.

Daughter loves it. In a sorority, loving that. Has tons of friends outside of it and in other sororities and non Greek clubs. Beauty of the surroundings is a huge plus to her. Academically thriving. It’s a great fit for her.

Yes, and usually those threads are overwhelmed quickly with parents whose kids didn't like it and want to bash the school and its students. Enjoying this thread so far with lots of helpful feedback from parents of actual students. Hopefully the haters decide to leave it alone this time!

Would you mind sharing which local school district she attended? How does she find the classes compared to the AP classes she took in HS? Does she have time to relax or is it all grind all the time? My DC is a little interested in W&M and I think it would be a great fit, but I can't get a sense of how intense it is.

LOL. This is the why, according to our daughter. I don't even think it is just a Saturday night thing. The kids strike up conversations with each other there.
