AP exams and illness

The AP exam schedule came out yesterday, and I noticed that there was no alternate date for some of the AP exams. What happens if a child is sick on the day of the exam?

They take it anyway. Like else where in the world where exams are exams.

Is this your school's schedule? There is a conflict between Maryland Primary Day on Tuesday May 14 and AP English Language and AP Physics C. They are being taken in MOCO on the scheduled make-up day. (May 23 and 22, respectively) There is no other make-up date.

The official college board schedule has makeup dates/times for all the tests: https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/exam-administration-ordering-scores/exam-dates/late-testing-dates

Maybe it’s just your school schedule that doesn’t list them? You could reach out to your school’s testing coordinator to ask if you are concerned.

It depends, right? General cold? Sure. I did that with my GMATs. If they have a fever, which means they are infectious, and vomiting? I would say no, they shouldn't.

OP here. Yea, I think it must be the school because I also noticed on the college board website, the alternate date was there.

We will call the school on Monday but I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this type of situation.

Illness is generally an emergency situation. There are other situations in which you can consult with your school's AP coordinator to schedule taking the test on one of the make-up days. (For example, a student with extended time is scheduled for 2 exams on the same day)

If they tell you there's a make-up day, students will decide to put off the exam. If you call to ask the school, they're going to assume you're trying to decide which day is more convenient. The only time you need to contact them is if, day of, your kid is ill enough not to be able to sit for the exam.

Why do you need to call the school now? Have your kid take the test on the normal day, and if there is an emergency, deal with it then.

But, they listed alternate days for other exams, just not this one. I hear you about kids choosing to push it off, but then why have alt days for the other exams?

The College Board has established the one and only available make up day for all of the exams it offers. MCPS has to use them for Physics C and AP English Language because of the primary on 5/14. For other tests, the make ups are for emergency situations OR for special educational situations. They aren't just "I like it better on May 22 or 23" make-up dates.

It typically takes a major illness/injury or life event to be able to take an exam during the makeup window. Sniffles/allergies do not count. Taking the makeup exam will be left to the discretion of the AP Coordinator at that particular high school. If something is already on the calendar like a wedding/surgery, contact the AP Coordinator immediately. If something comes up day of test, like car accident or projectile vomiting, contact your school's AP Coordinator.

Note for those who may not be aware: The AP Exam schedule comes out very early in the school year. If there is a major family wedding in May, you can start the conversation with the AP coordinator early.

That would be fine except when the school changes the Alt Exam days close to the exam dates.
