Four women contracted HIV from so called “vampire facials”

Anonymous
“Vampire facials” are a huge trend. I have had several. Be careful when you choose people and businesses to work on your body!

Summary

What is already known about this topic?

Transmission of HIV through cosmetic injection services via contaminated blood has not been previously documented; however, transmission of HIV via unsterile injection practices is a known risk. Determining novel routes of HIV transmission among persons with no known HIV risk factors is important.

What is added by this report?

Investigation of multiple HIV infections among persons with no known HIV risk factors who received platelet-rich plasma with microneedling (vampire facials) at an unlicensed New Mexico spa revealed likely HIV transmission associated with these cosmetic injection services.

I came on here to post this. I'm sure the risk is minuscule at any reputable spa, but I'm definitely not ever doing them again. Not even at my fancy Bethesda spa.

Why would you even consider this??

People are pathetically insecure and vain.

Oh that's dreadful. No one deserves that.

OP has “had several “ of these?

And?

ok, so - will people panic and stop getting these from licensed dermatologists?

I am scheduled to get one from my board licensed dermatologist in her office next month, but admit I am now nervous even though I trust her as a professional.

OMG imagine contracting an illness you have to manage for the rest of your life, that impacts your immune system forever, in order to look *moderately* more youthful.

This is also why I don't understand most plastic surgery. If it's to address a deformity or major issue that impacts your day to day quality of life, I understand why people go under the knife for it. But having major surgery just to look slightly better/more youthful? Or to make your body look more like some trendy ideal of what bodies should look like (larger boobs, a bigger butt, etc.)? I don't understand risking your overall health and wellness for that.

Also concerns re: possible Hep C and B.

Not worth it.

Oh yeah - I’ve decided that I’m not going to go now. I was nervous before these reports.

Even if someone is "pathetically insecure and vain" they don't deserve to be punished for it with HIV. Have some compassion.

I read an article about this and at least two of those four had had HIV diagnoses before the facial. It's all very strange and hard to follow. Nonetheless, why would anybody do this to themselves?

There is mercury in the blood.

I think the point is that this is an example of community spread through a beauty procedure.
We’ve seen Hep C from nail salons.
