Grand Canyon or Sedona for this?

Tagging along with DH to Phoenix. My in laws, my 9 yo, and I are going to drive to Sedona on day 3, and have dinner and relax at a nice Airbnb. DH Will join us the following morning. He’s adamant that we take DS to the Grand Canyon. He’s like “we’re so close, it would be a shame to miss it.” Whereas I was looking forward to having a leisurely day to spend in Sedona and taking in some of the sites there. I’d love to see the Grand Canyon and take my son too, but I feel like it will be so rushed. We are driving back to Phoenix and flying out the next day.
Day 1- Arrive Phoenix
Day 2 - Phoenix
Day 3 Phoenix to Sedona
Day 4 enjoy Sedona or day trip to Grand Canyon
Day 5 Drive to Phoenix and fly out

Which one should we do? Sedona or Grand Canyon?

You and son skip Phoenix.

Day 1 Phoenix
Day 2 sedona
Day 3 Sedona
Day 4 Grand Canyon

Granted, sedona is best on weekdays and miserable on weekends, so factor that in.

+1 to skipping phoenix.

We have an event in Phoenix so we cannot skip the full day there.

The Grand Canyon is worth it.

You are SO close! You can’t miss it. Go to the GC, you won’t regret it.

I would GC. Sedona is more of a multi day destination, where you do a lot of different hikes and take in the scenery. GC you can also spend a lot time too but it’s kind of one (big) thing and you can get your fill in a day. Especially with a 9YO and elderly (I assume) ILs, you aren’t going to be doing any strenuous hikes in GC anyway, so 1 day is sufficient.

I’d book a sunset Jeep tour in Sedona on your day 3 to see some amazing views and do GC day 4.

Do a pink jeep tour in Sedona.

I mean, it makes sense to see it, but onestly the Grand canyon is kind of boring after 30 minutes if you aren't doing something. Any chance you can go on the clear overlook or a tour/hike into it?

This is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen posted on here. The Grand Canyon is not "boring after 30 minutes."

They probably didn't hike down in.

The Grand Canyon is incredible and in no way boring

We just did a few days each in Sedona and the GC. In your case I would stay in Sedona and enjoy it for the day. Do a couple short hikes and a pink jeep tour. Otherwise you are spending a lot of time in the car. We liked the GC, but recommend spending at least one night there otherwise it is a lot of driving and you may just end up looking around from the rim vs hiking in.

You stay in Sedona and go to a spa or whatever Elise it is you want to do in Sedona

Husband and son go to Grand Canyon on day trip

In laws join in on Grand Canyon trip or do their own thing for a day

They are not hiking in with a 9 yo and elderly parents anyway. There is so much to see around the south rim.
