Mile run, Turkey Trot

Anonymous
I see a lot of running events and am curious if little kids 6-9 really have the ability to run/walk very far? I think all of them could probably do a mile, but what about the longer Turkey Trots I see, and 5k runs? DD has expressed interest in running one of these races, I have no idea why. I am just thinking what distances are even feasible for the younger grade school set.

5k is doable. Some kids love running and work their way up to it easily. Some kids walk the whole 5k.

I saw a kindergartener run a 5k last week in 38 minutes....

My 7 year old ran a 5k on thanksgiving. He walked some of it but it’s only 3 miles. The walk to school each morning is a mile!

+1

For kids who like running, it’s a nice opportunity to win prizes, because there aren’t generally a ton of kids in that age group!

Yes, doable at those ages, but I'm guessing there would be some walking.

The hardest part to learn is pacing. I have seen girls on the run/Let me run kids doing 5ks and most of the kids go out fast, walk, jog a little, walk, sprint, walk, and so on to the finish line. I think a kid could definitely get up to the level of doing a 5k if they practiced!

My daughter is part of a Girls Running Club at school. Last fall, they ran a 5K at the end of the season. She is 8 years old and in 3rd grade.

My kids have been doing the 1-mile fun runs since they were 5. My oldest did his first 5k last year at 9 years old. We had to walk a bit because he isn’t good at pacing himself, but he finished pretty easily. This year I expect he’ll run the entire way. He plays soccer so is used to a lot of running—although not continuously at that distance.

Pp who posted about the K. She was with her dad who consistently runs 18 minutes 5ks! So impressive.

My kids did the JustTryan It triathlon (to raise money for childhood cancer, started by Ryan, a childhood cancer survivor) at young ages

I’d switch it up like Nintendo

When my son was 6 we entered a 5k turkey trot but it had a shorter like 1.5 mile route that he and dh were going to take. Well they missed the turn for the shorter route and just kept going on the 5k. He finished before i did, about 35 minutes. Since then he has a couple more 5ks and always does the turkey trot. At age 8 he is consistently faster than me. So if your kid likes to move, definitely doable.
