HS STEM magnet entrance requirements

Anonymous
Wondering if there are shared requirements or data points on who is accepted to the STEM-related high school magnet programs? DC is in 6th grade and I'm beginning to think about the different possibilities. I know it's competitive and takes into account multiple factors, but wondering if there are certain MAP/MCAP cutoffs for example, how much grades factor in, etc. Thanks for any direction!

MCAP is not relevant. If your child has all As and scores above the 99th percentile in 7th grade spring and 8th grade fall MAPs they might have a shot. Also need to be taking geometry in 8th for stem magnets and aids some enthusiasm for learning and proven interest in the subject in the day and prompts.

Ugh, SHOW enthusiasm in the ESSAY and prompts

I don't think geometry is a requirement. Blair has magnet geometry as an option, but I would imagine there aren't many kids in that boat.

Blair (and Pooleseville) is not the only STEM magnet.

The others are less competitive.

+1. About 1/4 of the magnet kids take geometry in 9th.

I'm not positive, but when DC was a freshman at @SMCS, they may have requested kids take that over the summer before 9th. I just never paid close attention because it wasn't applicable.

That makes no sense to give the slots to those kids.

And it doesn't make sense that a student with high enough MAP-M scores to get into the magnet wouldn't already be in the standard accelerated pathway which has them taking geometry in 8th grade.

Technically it’s an option. In reality it’s not and any kid who needs geometry in the magnet (there is one that I know of this year) is with non magnet students.

That’s not even a tiny bit true at Blair.

Some families purposely slow things down in MS to ensure a stronger foundation. Particularly when they can take magnet Geometry in HS or over the summer.

This year, there is not a magnet Geometry class for 9th. A couple of kids did it over the summer. Everyone is in Precalculus or Functions.

Is Functions the same as Algebra II?

Precalculus is enriched Algebra 2 + Precalculus. (and accelerated at Blair).

Functions is further accelerated same class.
