What MD or DC neighborhoods should I be looking at?

So... for several years I have rented in Takoma/Brightwood, near-ish to Takoma Park, and I feel the neighborhood fits me very well. I like the vibe, the diversity, the community. I have friends from this area, Columbia Heights, Petworth, as well as Silver Spring. I would stay here if I could. However, I now have two young children, and I'd like to purchase property in the next few years - a home in a good school district where my kids can continue through high school, safe, community-oriented, liberal, not too pretentious. My budget for a home probably caps at about $700k. What neighborhoods in DC or MD should I consider? I know my budget is low, but I'm hoping I can make it work. Thoughts?

You could look at homes zoned for East Silver Spring elementary. They go to the same middle and high school as Takoma Park.

20895, specifically north Kensington. We moved from DC and love it here.

If you love your neighborhood, I think you should at least consider playing the school lottery and seeing how it goes. You usually have some time to figure things out, since most schools are good for pre-k and probably early elementary. (I’m not familiar with your zoned schools, but they may be good for even longer.) Our kids lucked out and ended up in an excellent DCPS elementary and then a wonderful 5th-12th charter. We had already bought, unlike you, so we were more stuck than you. But we’ve been so happy we stayed.
