Is 30-45 minutes working out

4x a week, enough to stay fit/healthy as I age? i don’t want to spend hours in the gym.
I do strength training and yoga or pilates mostly. I don’t really do cardio but my heart rate goes up if its a strong strength training like an AMRAP workout. What else should I be doing?

Yes. Just make sure it is of appropriate intensity. Poo pooing on the elliptical for 30 minutes is garbage. A slow walk for 30 minutes will produce minor results.

Any workout is better than no workout of course. But if you spend the time doing one, might as well challenge yourself. You need to break a sweat.

What are you doing the 166 hours of the week?

Buzz off and not helpful.

Yes, it really matters how you spend the majority of your time, not how you spend 2-3 hours a week. Working out hard for 30 minutes, 4X a week will do nothing if you don't move and eat too much terrible food the rest of the time. It's unfortunate that some folks cannot see where working out falls within the big picture of how they spend their time.

This is a strange use of this term. Usually when you "pooh pooh" something you are dismissing it as being foolish or impractical. Perhaps "lollygagging?"

Yes that’s enough! Add in some walks if you can or just generally gets steps into your day and that’s a great mix.

Right, if you are sitting the rest of the week then it's not enough. You need to be moving all day, every day. 1-2 hours walking is better than 30 minutes doing yoga.

This. I do think you need to physically push yourself, get totally out of breath, reach muscle failure, etc. if you don’t have a medical contraindications to strenuous workouts.

I was a big walker for years. Just joined a gym and have learned that I am really bad in areas like flexibility and balance. I need yoga not more steps.

It absolutely is. I do exactly this at a Crossfit gym. 42M who hadn't worked out since college. 4x a week is the sweet spot for me. I set aside an hour, but half of that is stretching/mobility/warmup. I'm very fit after 2 years of this.

I hate cardio, but it's like taking your medicine. Gotta do some. Like you, I like it best if I combine it with weights in a workout for time, AMRAP, or EMOM.

It is plenty. I run three times a week - five miles which takes me 45 minutes. Do 2 45 minute bootcamps a week and one 45 minute pure strength. I'm in great shape.

How old are you? As you age could mean you are in your 40s. If you're 40s I don't think 30 mins for 4x a week is very much. The older you are the more sense it makes. For a 70 yr old that would be great.

You're doing significantly more than OP, 45min 6x a week with cardio mixed in. OP seems to be avoiding cardio.

I would add it also depends on your age. By your 50's you should be focusing on strength, balance, flexibility and impact (walking) for bone health. Cardio is also important - but what you do for cardio will change as you age.
