I was diagnosed with MS a couple of years ago, and so far it is well controlled (by Kesimpta). We’re moving to a new area and looking at housing, and I’m wondering if I should be considering my MS diagnosis when thinking about what kind of housing to buy. Specifically, stairs are now fine for me, but should I be prioritizing single level living with the idea they might get harder? I know this is somewhat unanswerable, and I think the answer would have been yes before the current high efficacy med options, but I’m curious what other people with MS are thinking about this these days. |
I think these days MS can be well controlled enough that you don’t need to consider this now. |
I would. We don't have MS but are reaching retirement age. I'm definitely looking at single level houses.
My friend has a split level and had a terrible time after hip surgery, which was a temporary situation. My father had a one level house with a two inch front doorstep and was able to stay there until he died. |
You could look for somewhere that at least has a bedroom and full bath on the main floor and not too many steps up to the house. If you're hoping to live in this new house when you retire, I think this would make sense even without MS. |
I’m you OP and yes a bedroom on first floor full bath |
+1 |
First floor seems level like a good idea BUT watch out for houses built straight on a concrete slab. That will put a lot of pressure on your joints. You do not need even MORE problems. |
My DH has MS and I feel grateful every day that we live in a single-level house. We bought it years ago before the MS progressed, but at this point stairs would be a major issue for him. |
This is not my observation at all. I wish it were true. |
