Lost Weight and need a new wardrobe. Help please

Anonymous
I've been working hard at it, and grateful that I've reached a point where none of my clothes fit. Because I have been unhappy with my body, most of the clothes I have outgrown are a hodgepodge of Amazon, Target, Macy's, etc.

I want to step it up, but not too much. I'm trying to buy "capsule" wardrobe from two stores- one for work or semi-dressy and one for put together casual.

Any suggestions?

You need to post your body type (apple, pear, etc) and approximate height. Also, are you buying regular sizes, or plus/petite?

You need a couple pairs of jeans, couple pairs of slacks, a dress, probably a swimsuit? and tops. But your body type will dictate the cut and style.

definite apple (think Humpty Dumpty)
5'9
currently in a regular 12, maybe 10.

I'm hoping to walk into two stores (or online) buy 5 or 6 things, and come out with a consistent look. I tend toward solid colors in the cool spectrum and simple uncomplicated cuts.

TIA

How old are you? That makes a difference too.

JJill: For Women Who Have Given Up

(And that is clearly not OP, who, having lost a bunch of weight, is clearly trying to avoid frump.)

Also what “level” do you want to dress at? For example my wardrobe is mostly athleisure (work from home) with a few dresses/formal pieces (church). No in between. Also my shape is busty so I do well at particular stores- I find the fit at Talbots is the best. When I lost weight I bought a few cute things from TJ Maxx and then built out the rest slowly.

GAP. for basics
H&M for added flourish
Abercrombie and. Fitch for some solid style
Banana republic (as above)

I like Uniqlo for t-shirts. They also have good jackets.

OP, do not take fashion advice from someone who shops at Talbots and TJ Maxx.

Talbots gets a lot of hate on DCUM but they make quality basics that last - I buy my jeans there, and some jackets. I find them pricey for tops, and too cutesy for sweaters.
Look at Lands End and Boden, which generally are cut well for straighter figures. And Macy's has a variety, if you want one-stop.

You probably want a mid rise or even low rise pant. I like this website for advice:

Can you give us an idea of a style or celebrity look you like? How do you spend your time? your clothes need to work for who you are, otherwise its a costume

Scoffing at Talbots is a luxury for the small-busted. It may not be super fashion forward, but guess what, after age 20 you need clothes that fit nicely to look good, and Talbots is a totally legitimate option if you have curves or an apple shape. It is the only place I have consistently found clothes that look more expensive- because they fit beautifully without tailoring!

Same with TJ Maxx- if you’ve recently lost a lot of weight, your body is in transition. You are figuring out what fits right and looks good and what you will actually wear consistently- you don’t want to make a big investment yet. I’ve been in this situation- apple shape, weight loss and all. Maybe you haven’t. YMMV.

Also, there’s no way for me to prove this so it will sound defensive regardless, but I look damn good, especially in the DMV. I have an hourglass figure that I worked for and I know what clothes work for me. It doesn’t matter what store you shop at if you know what you are doing.
