Solo parent trip to great wolf lodge- win

Anonymous
For those of you who took multiple children on a trip without another adult, did you enjoy the trip?

I have been a single (co parenting) mom for a few years now and haven't taken my kids anywhere without a family member to help. My ex is semi helpful but doesn't take them on trips. I decided to do an overnight to great wolf lodge with my 5 and 7 year old since we hadn't left town in a while.

Even though it was one night, it was a lot of work. We went to the waterpark 3 times the first day (got there early in the morning) and spent the second day in the water too. The logistics were a lot by myself, all the little chores like hanging up swimsuits, packing, hauling stuff to the car, driving, keeping the kids from running away, taking them to the scheduled kids activities...

But it was so worth it! My kids had a blast. We went on all the waterslides together since my youngest was just tall enough. I felt so happy that I did it on my own. If you have a partner that doesn't like to do getaways, I recommend going even if you have younger children! With the deal I had it was only $200.

Just came back from an event where several parents talked about solo-parenting at Great Wolf Lodge last week so it seems like the place to be for solo parents!

I'm a single parent now, but did this when my kids were little and my then DH was working a ton. I agree it's a great place to go.

It was perfect. So easy, like being on a cruise with everything accessible. We could go rest in the room then go back downstairs to do an activity! Tons of free events like yoga, dance party, and storytime that my kids loved.

I saw a lot of other solo parents there. Actually the couples seemed to have more issues. Two DV incidents happened while we were there...on a Monday. This is a location near Stockton though, so it brings a certain crowd sometimes. Luckily we didn't witness it, just saw the police. At least the security was on it and they were kicked out.

Two!

I was going to ask how the food was or tips on places nearby, but are you taking about a California location?

I only have one kid - so it’s vastly different. But it’s always been easier to travel with her solo than with her dad/my husband. You just know you’re doing it all, and what you don’t want to do doesn’t get done.

Why do you need a second person to take your kids somewhere?

There are a bunch of threads on GWL in the Travel forum. I'm a single parent and have done both the VA and MD locations with my kids (who are now aging out).

Some places are more enjoyable with one parent than others, and OP is sharing one that worked well.

We went to GWL with kids who were 3 and 6, so meeting different height requirements, but both needing supervision around the water, and the layout worked to allow my older kid to do some things while I watched both. We have done other outdoor parks where that didn’t work at all, and I was glad I had a second adult.

As long as the kids are good swimmers, wear vests, and stay together.
