Medication to help stay on task?

Anonymous
DS14 has ADHD and stimulants help him a lot stay focused in school, on homework, etc. But he still gets lost in between tasks remembering what he's supposed to do after finishing assignment A or why he went into the bathroom (to brush his teeth). Is this something that a higher dose could help with?

For routine tasks, he is open to trying checklists. But that doesn't work for a lot of his day. And he and I are both tired of me repeatedly reminding him.

That’s life with ADHD. Higher dose doesn’t help you remember why you went into the bathroom. His medicine helps him stick with assignment A while working on assignment A. A planner or religiously consulting his school’s LMS will help remind him that he has to complete assignment B. He will need to get into the habit of checking his planner/LMS for all of his courses nightly and make a plan of what he needs to accomplish (paper checklist that he writes and marks off not you). An executive function coach can teach this, but your son will need to make the choice to do it every day for weeks to have it become a habit.

Also, giant sticky notes he can use to make himself reminders might work. This is on him not you. If he’s tired of you reminding him, it’s time for him to choose to figure out a not tech way to remind himself. Look up the Pomodoro technique (get an analog timer either a kitchen timer or the one hour clocks timers that you set where time remaining is red-can find on Amazon).
